Introduce Vocabulary through Games
When teaching beginner English learners new vocabulary, what better way to do it than through games? Engaging activities not only make learning enjoyable but also help students retain new words. Think about incorporating games like BINGO, Memory, "I have who has?", or even Flashcard Challenges. These games can create excitement in the classroom and motivate students to participate actively while practicing their English skills.
Repetitive Practice is Key
Studies suggest that people need an average of 10-17 meaningful interactions with a new word to transition it into long-term memory. This means that incorporating repetitive practice throughout your lessons is crucial. Try setting up stations where learners can engage in different activities centered around the vocabulary they are learning. Whether it’s writing sentences, using words in conversation, or even peer teaching, constant repetition helps solidify their understanding and use of new words.
Learn Vocabulary in Thematic Chunks
One effective strategy for teaching vocabulary is to present words in thematic chunks. This means grouping related words together based on a specific theme, such as "food," "clothing," or "weather." When students learn vocabulary in context, it creates a stronger schema, making it easier for them to recall related words later. You could even create thematic units that incorporate various activities, allowing for diverse learning experiences.
